Freedom Through Obedience

The not-so-wise among us often mistake freedom for doing whatever we want… whenever we want. While freedom gives us the ability to make our choices, it is often not wise to rely on our own decision making skills. God allows us choice. But, essentially we must choose between two possibilities. We are free to do as He guides us, or go at it on our own. The latter got us kicked out of Eden.

The Bible is packed full of stories of God releasing people from bondage and giving them their freedom. But, it was always done with guidance and oversight. For over four-hundred years the Hebrews were enslaved in Egypt. When he finally freed them from their oppressors they weren’t just set loose into the wild. That would be similar to a breakout from the dog pound. “Open all of the cages and run… you are free now!”

As a group they were lead by God to a place He had set aside for them. The Promised Land was fantasized and dreamed about by the Hebrews. It was a land flowing with milk and honey. Yet, this wonderful land would come with some do’s and don’ts.

God freed them from their slavery with a new set of rules for living. There were rules for almost every aspect of life. The law covered basic living, harvesting and worship. There was even a rule regarding proper rest.

Complete and open freedom will lead to complete destruction. God gives us barriers and guidelines for our benefit and security, not to limit us or punish us.

Don’t mistake freedom for doing whatever you desire. This was a huge debate in the first century. The thought was, “Since we aren’t saved by the law… but by grace, why not have a blast and sin all we want. For the more we sin, the more grace will be present.”

This was actually addressed in 2Peter 2:19 (NLT)

“You aren’t saved by being good,” they say, “so you might as well be bad. Do what you like; be free.” But these very teachers who offer this freedom from law are themselves slaves to sin and destruction. For a man is a slave to whatever controls him.”

Freedom, like anything else should be enjoyed responsible and in moderation. People in recovery know all too well that moderation and responsibility require great effort. Individuals in recovery must stay on guard and resist the natural tendency to “go at it on your own.” Because eventually, something (or someone) will control you, as Peter said.

You are no longer bound by law. This is true. Isn’t it wonderful we aren’t responsible for knowing and keeping the 600+ laws of the Old Testament in order to be saved? Nonetheless we should choose to be obedient. The law now lives in our hearts in the form of the Holy Spirit. Choosing to listen to the soft guidance of God’s Spirit will reap you countless fruit.

Being free means having choice. Choose to be obedient. That is where you will find your freedom.
